When the good life lets you down…

I’ve lived the good life. Had the nice home. More than enough money. All of the conveniences of modern living. And yet, I approached midlife with the sickening feeling in my gut, that I had been sold a bill of goods. The consumer-driven, “good life” was letting me down.

I woke up one morning and realized I was tired of spending the weekends working on the house. Mowing the grass. Keeping the new automobiles clean. I was growing tired of the thoughts of what we were going to buy next, as if that was what life was all about. Working hard and writing checks to the banks and credit card companies, including $1000 a month for the new automobiles alone, was taking its toll. And it was all losing it’s meaning for me.

I knew there was much more to life than this. And thankfully, I have been speaking and coaching for years. But I had discovered that a majority of my energy and time was in service to the consumer-driven way of life. Keeping up with the Jone’s – as the saying goes – was draining, taking more time, energy, and money than I had realized, and my marriage – as well as my passion and true contribution – was getting the scraps.

Can you relate to any of this?

The most tragic aspect of the whole thing was the impact that it had on my family. As I lost interest in being a servant to the consumer-driven way of life, and turned my heart and energy to a more purpose-driven way of life, I noticed that the rest of my family wasn’t aligned with me at all. As you might have already guessed, this brought with it a number of issues. It represented a major shift in values and a major shift in what type of future my wife and I wanted to live into.  Eventually, it fell apart. No alignment. No shared vision. No future together.

I’m wondering how common this is for others. How about you? Are you discovering – through your own experiences – that the consumer-driven way of life has let you down – that it just isn’t that appealing anymore? I can assure you that the consumer-driven world has nothing to give you that can compare to what YOU can give to the world. Is there a purpose – a passion – arising within you, ready to emerge through you and into the world? That certainly remains true for me, and I’m attentive each day to how my passion to be a massive contribution in the world continues to grow within me. In fact, right now, I’m in the process of simplifying my life in order to focus my energy, time, and resources into living my passion in the world in bigger and more meaningful ways.

If you can relate to what I’m sharing here, I would love to hear from you! If nothing else, just drop me a line to say hello. And better yet, I would love to hear YOUR story. Write to me in the comment area below or e-mail me. My passion as a coach includes the desire to connect with like-minded individuals and support them in living a purpose-driven way of life, and to let them know that it’s OK to let go of the consumer-driven approach to living.

There IS a different way. And it’s a way that honors our magnificence as a human beings. It’s a way that fosters our growth and acknowledges the gift that we are to ourselves, others, and the larger world we share. And together we can explore it, create it, and share it with others.

Live boldly.

Yes, Denver….you hit the nail on the head. I had it “all” too and found that I was left a gaping hole in my heart. I was empty, yet our bills were stacking up and my marriage had fallen apart. When we ran out of money and could no longer support the life we were used to, there was really nothing left. We had been so busy being consumers that we were blind to the true issues in our own lives. Sure, I enjoy beautiful things. And while at the mall the other day I realized why I used to shop there often….it is beautiful and who does not want to bring home some of that beauty to their world? I did not buy anything by the way, it was fun to just look around and see what is new out there. I have found that by creating my own beauty, my own peace I DON’T need to or want to buy as much. I have that beauty and peace within me and that is priceless.
